ESPASSO is pleased to announce the US launch of furniture re-editions by Oscar Niemeyer and Jorge Zalszupin. The launch marks the first time the re-editions will be made available stateside and ESPASSO is the exclusive retailer. To celebrate, ESPASSO will open COMPASSO an exhibition of both lines of furniture as well as launch a new monograph Jorge Zalzsupin: Design Moderno Brasileiro which examines the designer’s influence over the years. The furniture will be made available when the exhibit opens to the public on May 13 and it will be on view until June 3, 2014. The re-editions provide US buyers with the opportunity to purchase for the first time ever, seminal pieces typically only available as vintage items at auctions. Oscar’s pieces were originally designed in the 1970’s with his daughter Anna Maria Niemeyer and the launch will feature 4 items: the Rio rocking chaise, Marquesa bench, Alta armchair and ottoman. Jorge’s line features 20 pieces designed in the 1960’s and include: the Circa bench; Petalas and Romana coffee tables; Adriana, Ipanema and Ina armchairs; and other items. The esteemed ateliers of Etel Interiores in São Paulo is producing both lines of furniture crafting each piece with high-quality finishes and materials.
Oscar is widely regarded as one of Brazil’s most influential architects, whose visionary work continues to have a profound impact on modern architecture worldwide. Jorge is the founder of the seminal design house L’Atelier which created furniture and home items many have considered classics. Both designers have played a critical role in shaping Brazil’s modernist identity and often had intersecting practices. They collaborated on Brasília, the country’s federal capital and one of the world’s most ambitious architecture projects. Oscar designed the elegant and astonishing buildings that made up the city and Jorge created furniture pieces that outfitted several of the official structures.
“Oscar Niemeyer and Jorge Zalszupin are icons whose influence on architecture and design is unprecedented and far reaching. We are honored to be premiering these re-editions in America because each item tells a story of their innovative design, in addition to Oscar and Jorge’s rich legacy,” said ESPASSO’s Carlos Junqueira.
