Cais das Artes by Paulo Mendes da Rocha

Paulo Mendes da Rocha’s brutalist buildings have received worldwide acclaim since as early as the 1950’s, culminating in  the prestigious Mies Van der Rohe Prize in 2000 and the Pritzker Prize in 2006. In collaboration with the Brazilian Metro Arquitetos e Associados firm, Rocha’s latest project, the arts complex Cais das Artes, in Vitória, ES, Brazil, consists of a theater, museum, library, auditorium, café and 3,000 sq meters of exhibition space. Suspended above Vitória’s docks, the Cais das Artes continues Rocha’s concerns regarding architecture and its materials relation to their distinct environments.
