This past Monday in São Paulo’s Pacembú neighborhood, architect Arthur Casas hosted a lively birthday dinner party for ESPASSO’s Carlos Junqueira. With a guest list that brought together a faction of cultural producers that define the contemporary architecture, design and art scene in Brazil, the setting of the party may have indicated their modern legacy: Casas’ home is a 1943 residential project by seminal Brazilian architect João Batista Vilanova Artigas, one of the founders of the Escola Paulista, architectural movement that counterposed the Escola Carioca and its smooth curves (typified by Oscar Niemeyer), by embracing exposed concrete, simpler lines and play with volume.
