Named after a species of native Brazilian cactus, the Mandacaru bench by Carlos Motta has a commanding presence with its spear-like beam, rising vertically above the seat. To make the piece, the designer transformed remains from demolition sites into organic, impeccably polished forms. The bench beautifully exemplifies Motta's technical woodworking background and his ability to imbue great sensuality to reclaimed wood. His interest in mastering the possibilities of the material also reflects a thoughtful connection to the environment and sustainability, which the designer has unwaveringly maintained since the beginning of his career.

The bench - the only one made - will be on display for the first time in the United States in the exhibition "Used and Reused Wood: Furniture by Carlos Motta" at ESPASSO in New York. The exhibition opens on Wednesday, September 22 at 8 pm and will run through October 22. To find out more about the event, please click here.

Space for Thought is the story behind a great piece or designer at ESPASSO, with the purpose of sharing Brazil's rich cultural heritage and the work of today's emerging talents. We hope you enjoy it.
